Interested in Music and the Music Biz?

Posted by Grateful Fred on October 8th, 2010

If you are interested in music and the machinations of the music biz then I highly recommend the “Bob Lefsetz Letter“.  Bob Lefsetz is probably one of the most knowledgeable, enthusiastic and opinionated music business “outsider/insider” that there is.

I love receiving Bob’s writings which arrive in my inbox almost daily.  He’s “on our side” and is as enthusiastic about music as we all were all those years ago when we started with all this.  You could also take a listen to his podcasts on Rhino Records “Rhinocast“.  Here’s a link to the archive so you could either listen online or add them to your iPhone or MP3 player. http://www.rhinomedia.com/RZine/rhinocasts/archives.lasso

A great “resource” to enjoy.  Go there now!

Ashleigh Flynn At Grateful Fred’s

Posted by Grateful Fred on October 8th, 2010

Ashleigh FlynnWell, we had a great night with Ashleigh Flynn last night.  As I’m typing this (11.50am Friday) she’s tucked up in bed after coming back to our house we’re we all sat and eat and drank a few glasses of wine until about 1.15am at which point I think everyone was pretty well wacked.  I know that Ashleigh had had a really busy last few days having been to Ireland and then Hebden Bridge so she’s probably sleeping the sleep of the totally knackered.

She put on a great night for us and I just loved her songs.

It was great to see new faces in the audience and although our turnout (30) was half the size of our last Grateful Fred Night I think its’ a combination of it being a Thursday night instead of a Friday, (which seems to make a difference to some people) and also because our last night was the very first Grateful Fred Night and so friends attend who might not really be into the music but feel that they want to lend their support.  This time I think the audience was almost totally made up of people who wanted to come because of the music which is the only way to build a regular audience.

Hopefully on our next Grateful Fred Night on Sunday November 7th with Andy White we might add even more to our core audience and climb back to the 60+ level.  Who knows.

This time we did everything we could to publicise the event.  We postered wherever possible locally, flyer-ed in Formby village for a couple of hours on the previous Saturday, contacted as many local newspapers and publications as possible, (with very little success sadly – not sure what it takes to get that!!) and used online resources and websites (to a great deal of success and support from all )…but it’s still very difficult to know how best to increase our impact.

We will be doing the same to promote the 7th of November but if ANYONE has any ideas or suggestions on any other ways we can publicise Grateful Fred Nights or improve upon what we are doing currently I’d be ….”made up to hear from you!!”.

I’ll have some pictures and videos of the night up very soon.
